Possible photos/images that reflect/represent genre

The Stop sign definitely represent the album as it relates to the lyrics "I can't stop". Secondly STOP signs are usually found in urban areas. Urban areas are places where most house music is played. The song I can't stop does create this image in my head.

Skiing also brings an image to my mind as it symbolises being out of control that goes along with the lyrics "I can't stop". furthermore the line "I can't stop" is a reference to the effects of drugs, therefore skiing can act as a reference to gathering speed and momentum of the drug/drugs taking affect.

Here is a image of a bright action pack clubs scene, which is where most house music is played as I have said before. Secondly my artist would play events or gigs at venues such as night clubs. lastly,  many of my audiences age range that listen to my genre of music, house. They spend a large amount of there leisure time in clubs, so if I put this in my digipak it would attract the target audience more easily.

Props

Drink

This is an important prop as it follows the codes and conventions of a music videos and relates to the party atmosphere. When advertising alcohol in my music video I will make sure that it is part of the music video, the aim of which is to sell the artist and not the alcohol. Alcohol also acts as advertising the party lifestyle.  That is why I will be using this particular style of prop in my music video.

Car

Will be useful in shooting scenes on the road that represents speed and can symbolise the build up of speed of the music video. That is why I will be using this particular style of prop in my music video.

Designer Clothing and provocative Clothing

This will be important as designer clothing is important for my target audience of 18-30 year olds as it is seen as important for them to dress in Designer clothes when they go out to town. That is why I will be using this particular style of prop in my music video.

Skis

Even though Skis don't have a direct link to the codes and conventions and what you would expect as a prop for house music video. However it does relate to my Lyrics "I can't stop" as they are an object that does make you go fast. That is why I will be using this particular style of prop in my music video.

Sound System

It will be important to have this as this acts as my instrument as this is what house musicians such as Djs would use, however it is hard to get my hands on therefore that is why I will not be using this particular style of prop in my music video.

Strobe Lighting

It is important as house music is associated with clubs and strobe lighting is in clubs, displays excitement and a fast pace. Which I can then later edit for my song.

Locations

Limone Italy

I chose the snowy mountains in Italy as possible location for filming as the geography of the area is imposing and stunning so will attract viewers who were watching my music video. Therefore I may be using this location in my music video.

Skiing

Shots of people skiing fast which will be edited to the beat of the music and will represent a sense of out of control and not being able to stop. Relating to the songs lyric- "I can't stop". Therefore I will be using this location in my music video.

Club Scene

These scene will be vital as they follow the codes and conventions of house music, furthermore there are plenty of good clubs that I can go into to film in, such as Rock City. Furthermore it links to most other digipaks of house genre having a picture of the music scene. this help the audience quickly identify that it is a house music song. this will be vital in securing my target audience which will be interested in the clubbing scene as they are young and are still relatively novices for the club scene. So it is still more likely to be appealing towards a 18-30 year old range then someone in there 40s or 50s. Therefore as I will want to include it in my shooting as I have included it in my animatic.

Ideas for Video

Cameleon

I thought it would be a good idea to use a Cameleon changing its colour of its skin then editing it ti the beat of the music. It links into house music as many house music videos are full of colourful images or inudendos such as many of Hannah Wants music Video touch it. however overall it was a good idea however there was practical problem, is that I didn't have access to one. Furthermore it was an interesting idea however its hard to see how it will connect to the youth of today particularly as they are my target audience, particularly the youth of the U.K. which a large proportion will probably not know what is a Cameleon is. So I had to reject this idea.

Speed Dial

Speed dial on a car to represent power speed and the imminent drop of the music. It is also a good analogy to show power and speed of the music at different parts of the song. furthermore it does connect to the target audience as they are young so are aspirational and can make the link between car speed dial and the beat if the song. So I kept on this idea.

Dog

A Dog in my music video would be useful as an aid to edit to the beat as it builds up or slows down. It feature in other house artist such as Skrillex.  Furthermore I understand that having an animal is paramount in my music video for me as it switches things up in terms of props, they can be used to represent many parts of my song and they relate to a young target audience as animals are popular particularly dogs in that demographic. So I kept on this idea.

Club Scene

This is probably one of the most important scenes in my music video as it follows the codes and conventions of a typical music video.

Comparison to what I actually did

Overall for the majority I did actually follow my filming schedule as I couldn't really do it any other time, for example I only had less than a week to get all the ski footage that I needed. However I did need to re-shoot certain shots, such as going to town again to get a few more shots as the time when I went to film there wasn't that many people in town as the day I went and how early, I went. Therefore I went on the busiest day to therefore to fit the codes and conventions of a typical house music video.

Costumes

Typical house music wear

Here is typical house music wear, males usually always have rolled up sleeves as clubs are hot.. Also the t-shirt is baggy as it it supposed to represent being relaxed. The jeans are skinny as this is fashion at the moment secondly house artist such as Calvin Harris wears similar jeans. The shoes are meant to club proof and they have a sick sole and aren't flimsily like pumps so are suitable. For females and vintage sport jacket is usually shown in house music and it is to have some symbolism to drugs, as there is lots of pockets to hide stuff. Secondly the jeans are lose as this is displayed in house culture clothing is to be relaxed.

Men's Designer Wear

This is associated with what men wear when they go out or party, furthermore if my music gains a lot of views I could use product placement, with some designer wear.

Explanation of song choice- I Can't Stop

"I can't stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop
I can't stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop
I can't stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop
I I can't can't stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop
I can't stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop
I can't stop stop"

The Lyrics aren't complex nor is their variety in them. However they don't need to be as it is a house song and the codes and conventions of most house songs don't follow complex lyrics with variety. The purpose of the lyrics is to assist the beat of the music particularly when the repartition of "stop" comes in to play. When the beat picks up and quickens in pace and sounds out of control the lyrics "I can't stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop" The word "stop" does well to counteract with the fast pace of the beat. The line "I can't stop" illustrates something out of control such as a fast paced skier flying down a mountain or crashing. the word "stop" symbolises a stop sign or something.

Furthermore I Can't Stop is a catchy house song that has a steady beat that builds up with a big drop, which personally I am into that genre of house music were it builds up then drops. I go to many clubs such as Stealth located in Nottingham, that is famous for playing house music. Furthermore it is easier to follow the codes and conventions of house music by editing to the beat of the music. particularly if it is obvious where and when the beat changes as it is for my chosen song. Furthermore there is lyrics in my song which is "I can't stop", where I will need to use lip syncing which I have already perfected my skills at. With my Lip Syncing  filming and practice, where I used Megan to lip sync a One Direction song. I also realise that I will  poetically achieve more marks with the use of lip syncing in my music video. Furthermore the song ignited a lot of ideas of what I could use for shots and props in my music video.

Target audience collage

Through research that I have conducted I have found that House music is mostly listened to by people ranging from late teens to mid twenties, with no substantial difference between men or women listeners. This type of genre is mostly popular with people heavily involved in the club/party scene. House music is also popular with young people that go to University and may have a low disposable income. Geographically house music is popular across the world as whole, however there is hotspots were it is more popular such as Ibiza and Ayia Napa. The bottom right picture is supposed to be an analogy of a squeeze on finances house music is usually associated with young people of students who are just getting started in life therefore don't have a large salary, what they do have however is a large amount of disposable income as they only have to spend money on themselves.

Moodboard-To represent chosen genre- House

The reason I chose the picture displayed is because house music is associated with partying. Secondly house music is usually played in clubs particularly during the 1990s and now the 2010s. I have a power dial there displaying that house music is all about pushing the limits and almost an explosion.

Anamatic- I can't stop storyboard and treatment ot my anamatic usuing Goodwins Theory and shot list

Anamatic

I chose to use traffic as it symbolizes the lyrics of I can't stop", furthermore the switch between night and day is supposed to act as an establishing shot to show the urban transport. additionally it shows that the protagonist can't remember the day and is having mixed memories of what has actually happened. I wanted a over head shot of Nottingham as again it sets the scene. I wanted a shot of as it shows power and speed which symbolizes lyrics again I can't stop". Furthermore it relates to drugs when the individual reaches there peak after taking a drug. It is also important to show club scenes as it fits the genre of many music house music videos and thus follows the codes and conventions. I need people to dance as this shows lots of movement and people looking like they're off there face and not being able to stop. This is just my initial and I anticipate that there will be numerous changes when my rough cut and final cut are released. I chose the snowy mountains as possible location for filming as the geography of the area is imposing and stunning so will attract viewers who were watching my music video. It would be good for the opening sequence of my music video.

Treatment to my music video applying Goodwin's theory of music videos

As for Goodwin's theory of music videos, I want to create an animatic  that  can be easily transformed into a music video as you can see from my animatic my music video will be edited to the beat of the music, with fast and exciting changes in shots such as traffic and the difference between night and day, with many effects included with them. I also want to create a strong relationship between lyrics and visuals, e.g. "I can't stop" with displaying something that is out of control As you can tell from my animatic. It  is important as you can tell from my anaemic that I will follow the codes and conventions of typical house music scenes such as clubs as Goodwin argued that music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. Goodwin argues that record labels may want close up on the artist face I will supply these shots to a certain extent with my music video however, I still have to tie in with the codes and conventions of house music shots on there artist so I will not show all the artist face. I will have dancers in my music video as this follows the codes and conventions of a typical house music video.

Shot List

Mountain range- long shot with hand held shot
Traffic- Long shot- stationary shot
town center- Panning crane long shot
blender- close up stationary
tying shoelaces- close up
speed dial- close up
drinks on a shelf-mid panning shot
people dancing- mid shot
town center- panning crane long shot

Evidence that I have attempted to contact my artist

I researched my artists by going to one of the venues he performed before and I was given his events email address- fluxpavillionevents@gmail.com

Why I chose my Artist and research I used - Flux Pavilion

Flux Pavilion

My chosen artist is Flux Pavilion who is a English DJ who produces house music. House music is a genre that I have become very much interested in and didn't know really anything about until a couple years ago. It wasn't until I started going to clubs. I have always wanted to do a  house music video as it does seem fun and something that I would enjoy editing to the beat and using the visuals to the link to the beat is a skill and craft I would like to acquire. As I believe that it shows real editing skills and gives me the ability to fully display my creative ideas and skills. Flux Pavilion is known for his house music he creates and the big drops. He is most well known for his song I cant stop. Which was used in films such as The Great Gatsby and Rush. Which are both films that I am a fan of. So I have a connection to the Artist. Furthermore my Artist is English and I am a patriot so I believe that it is important to help support national artist. I researched my artist from events that he has attended such as Rock City so I asked for information at the desk about the artist, such as who he attracts for his audience, who are his fans and what type of his audience demographic is. This research will also be crucial in me to understand what my music video will be like and what to which type of audience I will be trying to aim my music video, digipak and magazine advert at. I found out that from some of the venue my artist has attended is that his target audience is 18-24 year old demographic. This is what I would have guessed and is what I am hopping for as I am a young person my self so I can guess who my media project needs to be catered at.

How I looked for my Artist

I mainly looked on the internet for my chosen artist. At the inception of looking for my chosen artist I didn't know what genre I was too look at. I used websites such as  http://www.unsigned.com.

After much listening, I decided to narrow my genre choice down to house as it was a genre I was familiar with, I would enjoy editing my footage to the beat of the music and lastly there is a large variety so I therefore had much choice. I couldn't find anything that really caught my ear, until I went on YouTube and found my song I chose. The song I came across and chose is "I can't stop" by Flux Pavilion. The song is typical of the house genre with the fast paced energetic beat it has and this is why I chose him.

I used You Tube as a search tool as it's the site with the biggest music collection on the internet, so by this time I used You Tube I realised that I was probably after a house music, I looked through House music channels such as "How Deep is your House". This gave me the option to sift through many songs, until I felt that I found  the right one.

I disagreed using sound cloud as  I felt the choice was very limited in what I could find I also couldn't find that many unsigned artist which I was looking for therefore I discarded sound cloud.

Practice lip syncing-One direction

Practice lip syncing-One direction

I chose One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful as its a well known song with over 300,000,000 views on You Tube. It is well paced the song therefore easy to follow. I chose the first bit of the song as it would have made no sense to start from the middle or end as it has a generic pace throughout. I used the participant (Megan) for lip syncing as she knows the lyrics of the song very well and can confidently display what words are being said. I decided to use a girl as it was a bit of fun therefore thought it would have a good affect as it was a girl singing a boys song, this makes it unusual therefore that does follow Goodwin's second rule for his theory of music videos. Megan is a drama student that is very capable inn exaggerating lip music and human emotion, therefore I believed that she would a suitable actor to act for my lip syncing.

Goodwins analysis of music videos

1. The Demonstrations of genre characteristics

Nearly all artist follow this rule, so that they can easily display to the viewer which category of genre that they fall into. For example rock genre tend to show a rock concert. R&B videos show dance and strong aspirational qualities. It is important to demonstrate genre characteristics of your music genre so that the audience know what type of music genre that they're listening to.

2. The Relationship between visuals and Lyrics

Lyrics are amplified through visuals, there's nearly always a clear correlation between visuals and Lyrics. There can be an obvious connection between lyrics and visuals or a subtitle or hidden meaning.

3. The Relationship between music and visuals

There is usually a link between visuals and lyrics, particularly in genres such as house music. For example the tempo, transitions, the beat ect all plays a role in the visual structure of the music video usually. However a more mellow music will have a slower fading transitions and camera movement. For instance in Rihanna's video "Unfaithful". There is a slow calm tempo thought the beginning of the music video. However the tempo then picks up to represent an increase in tension and the cuts become more rapid and cleaner.

4. The Frequent references to the notion of looking

These includes screens within screens. For example a television screen in a music video, such as emmeinems video Stan. Vouryemsim is used as well, meaning depictions of the female body in a sexual manner. For example Nikki Manaj represents herself in a sexual way by twerking and wearing hardly and clothes. particularly in her music video Anaconda. This is to attract the male audience and give the female audience someone or an ideal to look up to.

5. The demands of the record label

The record label may request the artist to to keep a certain hairstyle the same so they are easily recognisable and it is part of there're identity and brand. There would be lots of close ups on the artists face so that they are easily recognisable in they're music video. For example in Lady GaGa music video she wears strange clothes to represent her quirky and out of the world personality.

6. The Intertextual references

Is where the music video helps create a strong link between song, video and film. So that it helps build up the brand and recognisability of the artist. Which should have a knock on affect of boosting sales.

Animatic- Wild of the Night A$AP Rocky

Animatic- Wild of the Night A$AP Rocky.

I chose Wild For the Night as it is a personal favourite. It does follow the codes and conventions of a typical music video of the genre of rap. I practically focused on thee first 1.48 minutes of the music video as it is the build up with clever establishing shots setting the scene. It is set in the Dominican Republic were the genre of rap and R&B has a big following. The Mise en scene of  the music video is typical of the genre of music as Gold teeth are involved, drink, girls and glamorising the gangster lifestyle.

Music Video directors Jonze and Gondry succesful work

Michel Gondry

Gondry has his own very unique style of directing music videos, that all have an unconvention feel to them. His style of music video is known to make the audiance makes them feel seperated from the real world. He does this by using editing tricks and using hidden meanings in music videos such as around the world. Or heard em say by Kanye West, whuch is a cartoon music video with the main protagonist. Gondry has also won an Academy Award.

Gondry has created some of the best and imaginative music videos such as:

Kanye West - Heard em Say

Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter

Foo Fighters - Everlong

Gary Jules - Mad World

Daft Punk - Around The World

Spike Jonze

Spike Jonze took his love of all things pop culture and injected them into his many memorable videos. For instance Otis which had Kanye West in it. With Maybach 57s customized in it. The video was a real hit with over 76 million views on You Tube. This video stands out for Jonzes work as he does make sure to follow the codes and conventions of rap music, with low angel shots on the artist to make them look more imposing. Jonze is a very decorticated director when it comes to awards ranging from an Oscar for directing films to music videos from the world sound track awards.

Music video anylysis applying Goodwins theory of music videos

Daft Punk- Around the World

This is the music video of Around the world by Daft Punk, is a real anomaly in terms of following the codes and conventions of a typical house music video and Goodwin's theory of music videos. However if one looks carefully it does follow the codes and conventions of house music videos to a certain extent in a certain way. For example the beat is represented however through the use of the individuals in particularly costumes on screen. For example the figures dressed in tracksuits with  head costume that link to the fast pace bass guitar. There is a circular motion that
is to represent a vinyl. It is to show a merger between the future and the past. Furthermore this follows Goodwin's Theory as there is a illustration of visuals a lyrics. As people walking around in a circle is to illiterate to the audience and the lyrics, the title "Around the World".

There is a range of camera shots used, with the establishing shot showing everything within the scene along with all the protagonists. There is close up shots to focus the audience on specific spots of importance, such as particular dancers that dance to the beat of the music. The editing of the music video is very minimal. Therefore doesn't follow the typical codes and conventions of a house music video. As the editing isn't  fast paced or quickly cut either. The sound used in the video is also minimal with no dietetic sound for  effect. On the other hand this is compensated by the vocals that have been auto-tuned and edited in a futuristic robot like voice to make the song sound futuristic and unique. Which becomes attractive as a song.
Mise-en-scene plays a key factor for this music video. For example the silver helmets are a symbol of daft punk. Its a flagship part of there costume, that makes them easily identifiable. The costume of five groups of dancers are unique, this is to illustrate the diversity of the world and the people of the world. One of Goodwin's theory's of music videos is that the record label which the artist has signed for may want a unique style to one of  there music videos. I would say for Daft Punk for there music video around the world I would argue that this happened as there music video is very unique.

Justin Bieber- Confident

In the video, Bieber tries to seduce a young woman in a gas station but he missteps with an ineffective pun-based pickup line. Although he definitely piques her interest, she says he has to “try harder than that” to get her. Bieber spends most of video following her around and singing and dancing about how into her he is. A group of dancers is also shown dancing with Bieber. During its end, the singer surprises his love interest with a sensual kiss; he then asks her, "Can I have your number now?" while she gives a positive response.

This follows the typical codes and conventions of an R&B video. One of Goodwin's theory's of music videos is that music videos follow genre characteristics such as main protagonist is wearing casual clothes with a smart edge, most male artists dressed in smart/smart casual clothing. The video also displays the importance of jewellery as it is the most conventional piece of clothing in both R&B and Hip-Hop genres. In every R&B video you see, some sort of jewellery, whether that be a watch, a necklace, or an earring, the artist will have some form of jewellery, again, showing wealth and status in society. The main protagonist does display tattoos on his body. Tattoos are a big part of R&B culture again, with the majority of R&B artists having lots of tattoos. Tattoos are used to illustrate the creativity of the artist.  One of Goodwin's theory's of music videos is that the record label might want close ups on  the artists face as it helps boost there brand therefore an artist that is as big as Justin Bieber is used as it used to attract the audience.

David Guetta- Sexy Chick

David Guetta, is a French house music producer;  he achieved mainstream success in 2009 with his new song Sexy Chick, it reached number 1 in the United Kingdom. Guetta used R&B artist Akon to feature in his music as well as video, giving a hybrid of genres, R&B and House. The video was filmed in Ibiza, Barcelona, Spain, and Swindon, England around July 27, 2009.

Sexy Chick is directed by  Schuster. Akon, who is the artist that features in the music video wakes up and finds pictures of his date from David Guetta's pool party. This reflects how the music video of the times with the glorification of alcohol and partying. It also displays tot he target audience, young people. That drinking is good and fun.  He then finds lipstick note on his mirror that reads "find me at pool party" with yet another photo. This follows the codes and conventions of house music and sexuality.    As the party starts, people enter; a group of teenage boys are not allowed but they employ various methods to get in. This is supposed to mirror the male target audience wanting to get into the party and be there.  The camera flicks to Guetta arriving meeting up with Akon, who then grabs Guetta and they throw each other in the pool. This is supposed to represent the friendship between Guetta and Akon. The party continues as Akon pushes more people in, girls dance and Akon with Guetta are shown to be having a water fight. Voyremism is used here to act the scene as Sexual during the watertight. Voyremsim is used to sell the music video through sex appeal. Throughout the music video females in the music videos are wearing very little. This again is to attract the male audience. As Goodwin says and it is true for sexy, there is a sufficient relationship between music and visuals. For example when the word sexy chick comes up, the camera switches to beautiful girls dancing provocatively with very little clothes on. overall "Sexy Chick" does closely follow the codes and conventions of a typical music video. It also follows Goodwins theory as there is relationship between music and visuals as shot are edited to the beat of the music.

Different codes and conventions of different genres of music videos

Different codes and conventions of different genres of music videos

Rock-

Mise en scene would include the clothing to be usually black as this shows rebellious image of rock stars. Member of the band tend to wear leather jackets as this signifies rebellion as the mods wore leather jackets and youth that were associated with  wild and rebellious individual's during the early 1960s. However if the main protagonist is female they usually wear all white to signify innocence. Typical narratives- would tend to be a love story with a beginning, a middle and a end.
Editing- the speed of editing matches the pace of the music.
Cinematography- Tends to be close ups and extreme close ups
Lighting- Depends on the lyrics or mood of the music can be low or high key.

Queens video Killer Queen is a good example of how these codes and conventions are used for rock.

House-

The History of house music is short as it was born in the early 1980s in Chicago and latter became popular in the UK in the mid 1980s. The sound of house music is well known for its electronic sound and beat. It is usually played in clubs worldwide and has become popular with the age range from 18-30 years old. The key to a good house music video is that the visuals go along with the beat. repetitive arrangements and a steady bass drum beat have an affect of illustrating dancing, love, sexuality, and drugs. Which of course are all part of the club scene. Another code and convention is women doing sexual, seductive or provocative dance moves. Moreover the music video may have a DJ in the music video and the time is usually shot at night. The music video main puropose is to help the artist to make music sales, as there music videos can act as a form as advertisement by raising the profile of the artist.

-Wilkinson - Dirty Love ft. Talay Riley does closely follow the codes and conventions of house music, such as being shot at night and have females dancing.

R&B

The codes and conventions of R&B music videos represent men as having power and authority particularly over women. They convey this image by having the males topless. It also has another purpose of attracting females particularly young females by portraying the artist as a sex symbol. Females usually have very little clothing on, the purpose is to attract the male viewers. Since the lyrics are usually provocative and sexually explicit. These lyrics are illustrated on screen by having girls and guys dance in a sexually explicit nature. However some R&B music videos can break the codes and conventions were females don't dress seductively. R&B music videos are usually aimed at young people as they are usually the main target audience. Therefore social media such as YouTube is used by artist not only just R&B artists. Most young people use You Tube to watch music videos instead of just MTV. Furthermore  artist can make money from putting there videos on YouTube.

Hold you down- by Chris Brown is good example of an R&B video that follows the typical codes and conventions, such as the artist, Chris Brown being topless and this attracts females.

Irreplaceable- by Beyoncé is an example of an R&B music video that could be argued that goes against the codes and conventions of a typical R&B music video. AS the main artist who is a female does wear a lot of clothes and even shows women as powerful and not just subordinate to the male or just a se symbol. However it is still classes as following the codes and conventions of music videos as Beyoncé is still in fashionable clothes, it also follows Dyer star theory as Beyoncé dresses as what her fans would be dressed as therefore helping her generate even more revenue.

Rap

It is important for the artist to look intimidating and they do this by the clothing they wear such as a vest to show their muscles or big overcoats to make themselves look bigger. The themes are usually drugs/sex and violence. Baggy and causal clothing is used as this connects to the target audience, which is young males. They are the attracted to this genre and it is because of the objectification of women. Usually most rappers wear gold jewellery as this represent power and a high status. It is also what the target audiance strive for as they want to emulate the rappers lifestyle and be like the rapper. The girls featured in the rap video will usually be seductively  dressed and dance seductively. Most rap music videos will glamorize the Thug life.

A$AP ROOCKYs music video Goldie is a good example of a video that sticks to the codes and conventions, such as the jewellery shown, nude girls and glamorizing the thug life.

Dyer Star theory

  • Dyers star theory links into the idea of hegemony as the star needs to relate to his audience. Such as the case of pop stars, they relate to there audience culture by dressing like them. Therefore Dyer argues that the idea that icons and celebrities are manufactured by institutions for financial gain is true. Dyer argues that stars and the music industry make money out of audience, who respond to various elements of a star’s personality by buying records and becoming fans.
